One of the thoughts I have had about why I am unable to get great tasting Cappuccino from DW's TM31 is contamination of the Jug.

We are meticulous with our wash after we have finished a cooking session. This morning I boiled some eggs in the basket. If there was contamination the 13 minutes at Varoma temperature should have cleaned out the jug. The jug smells clear. The lid and seal, now that is another matter. The plastic still has contamination smell residue from past cooking sessions. Garlic, Onions, Tomatoes, is is a complete mixture with no predominant odour coming through.

On every occasion we remove the seal from the lid for the main wash. We also remove the cutter from the bowl for the final clean up as well. As I am the house husband in this home I will put the Lid & Seal (separately) in the dishwasher to see it that does a better job that hot soapy water in the sink.

Both DW and I smelled the lid, after I had boiled the eggs this morning, and it was not smelly clean.

Ted, can I suggest that you buy yourself another seal and keep them separate for sweet and savoury dishes.  I find my original seal was never tainted from cooking but the new type of seal does retain smells so I think we all need to have 2 of them.

I thought the new seal was supposed to be an improvement on the old seal?

Sometimes the original idea is better than the new one thermoheaven.  There were't too many complaints before the new seal came out but there have been heaps of postings about the problem since then so that speaks for itself.  The new one might seal better but it is the odour issue that is the problem.

Tomorrow I am going to an Open Day to look at becoming a TMX consultant. I will get a new seal when I am there, give it a try and if it works I will keep it just for frothing milk. I will contact my consultant who is going tomorrow and ask her if she can supply me with one. I also want a copy of the new 'A Taste of Asia: Authentic Chinese Cooking' cookbook. I am sure someone there will have a copy for sale. Hope I am not being to optimistic.

We have bought 2 Pressure Cookers in recent times. They both came with 2 seals, both types appear to be made from a silicone type material, but differ in Duro hardness. Both types quickly "inherited" the characteristic odour.

Maybe for the price Thermomix should consider supplying a spare as well? The Pressure Cooker cost's were $99.00 and $299.00, just a tad less than the price of a TM31.

I agree with you Ted re supplying 2 seals with our machines.  I am lucky enough to have a second bowl (with the dreaded new seal) but purchased 2 of the old ones quite some time back when my original started leaking.  I think I am right now for a few years.  H.O. have to know of the problem with the new seal but whether they are doing anything about it, is anyone's guess. Our consultants would surely report this type of problem to them if they don't see all the postings on this forum regarding that issue.
I am having my Asian cookbooks delivered this afternoon by my new consultant Lori - it will be so nice to meet her for the first time.

Have you tried giving it a good clean with water and vinegar?  I think there is somewhere in the EDC (in the front of the book maybe) that shows you how to clean out with water and vinegar?

Hi Ted. What makes you suspect that your bowl is contaminated? Does your milk taste of other things you have been making? The reason I ask is that I use a lot of spices in my cooking, and while the seal sometimes retains the smell of the spices I haven't found that this transfers to other dishes.

If you're going to the open day tomorrow then there will be a quite a few people you can ask about making great coffee in the TM. I prefer espresso coffee myself, so don't have a lot of experience with making cappuccinos! I know the ones in the cafes are about 1/3 espresso, 1/3 hot milk and 1/3 froth if that helps any.

regarding smell my consultant told me the vinegar thing works so give that a try... :)
